Reasons for Dental Implants

Dental implants are necessary because dental health can affect your overall health. For example, if you suffer from tooth loss, your adjacent teeth will start to shift and can cause other dental problems down the road. Single-tooth dental implants are a great way to prevent these problems and keep your smile looking its best.

There are various reasons why a patient might need a single tooth dental implant. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Missing teeth from a traumatic event that caused them to be knocked out
  • Damaged teeth that can’t be repaired with other treatments
  • Gum disease that causes the tooth to fall out or need removal
  • Severe tooth decay that requires tooth extractions
  • As part of the extensive dental work required for other dental procedures like a dental bridge or an implant-retained denture

Single-tooth dental implants may be the right solution if you are missing a tooth. Contact our office today to schedule a consultation!

What are single-tooth implants?

A single dental implant is just what it sounds like – a dental implant used to replace a missing tooth. Dental implants are made up of a durable titanium post implanted into the jawbone and a porcelain crown placed on top and acts as a replacement tooth.

Single-tooth implants are an excellent option for people missing a tooth who don’t want to undergo more extensive procedures like dental bridges or removable dentures. They are also a more affordable option than other dental implants, and the new tooth blends in seamlessly with the remaining natural teeth.

Dental Implant Treatment Process: What to Expect

Dental implant surgery is a generally simple procedure that can be completed in as little as two appointments. However, knowing what to expect from dental implant placement can help you feel more comfortable and prepared for your treatment.

Initial Consultation

A consultation with a dental team member is the first step in receiving dental implants to determine if a single-tooth implant is the best option for you. We will take x-rays and measurements of your jawbone to ensure you are a good candidate for the procedure. We will also perform a tooth extraction if necessary. Finally, our team will create a tooth replacement plan for you and your needs.

Pre-Surgery Care

Leading up to your surgery, you will need to stop taking certain medications that could thin your blood and increase your risk of infection. You will also need to continue proper care of your teeth, brushing and flossing your teeth as usual, but we will ask you to avoid eating anything hard, crunchy, or sticky to prevent further damage.

The First Appointment

On the day of your surgery, we will administer anesthesia to keep you comfortable during the procedure. The titanium post will then be surgically implanted into your jawbone, bone grafting will be done if necessary, and you will be given a temporary crown to wear until your permanent one is ready.

The Second Appointment

Once your single implant has had plenty of time to heal and fuse with your jawbone, you will come back for your final appointment. This typically will take between four and six months.

We will then remove the temporary crown and replace it with your permanent one. The permanent replacement teeth will be attached to the implant post using a strong dental adhesive. You will then be able to enjoy your new smile with confidence!
